RADIO/TV JOURNALS

You log tapes, take calls, label carts, conduct surveys,
answer phones, make coffee, photocopy some stuff,
record a commercial, practice putting a
smile into your voiceover, do an overnight shift,
record yourself over and over on a cassette tape
in your closet while cringing at the slight sibilance
you are working on, have your friends listen to your Sunday
morning show, do a remote at the shopping center
opening, hear your commercial on-air, make the
potato salad for the company softball picnic,
try to live down the 5 minutes of dead air
during your first shot at running the board,
score free tickets to the must-see concert,
write commercial copy for a dog adoption fair,
name drop, volunteer to blow up 250 balloons
for a station promo (use helium for cartoon
voice in commercial) -

so much for the first five months of your internship.

decide that you wouldn't trade this for
anything else.

LISA MORGAN "I am an adventurous person and will try most things when challenged. March 12th was my 38th birthday and I decided to confront my fear of heights by going skydiving. Of course everyone thought I was insane! The more people told me they would never do it, the more I knew I wouldn't back down..." [Watch Lisa's TV hosting spot for 'YOUR L.A' in her fifth month of training.]

RAJA SEIVWRIGHT "The reason I want to transition over from being an artist to being a radio personality is because it gives me a chance to be around music but not be on my own. I will have a network of associates and a corporate structure to grow and learn from. That is why the mentor program is so attractive to me. It will allow me to be around someone who can be supportive, experienced and informative..."

PETE CARRUOLO "He showed me everything from the room that housed the computer servers to the production and on-air studios for every station housed in the building. I stood and marveled at the brand new technology and desired to play with it. When I entered the 98 ROCK studios, I said to myself, “very soon, this could be you..."

SUZY YAZBECK “Loving music and the arts so much, I decided I would like to work at the only radio station that Beirut had. I managed to get an appointment with the Program Director and introduced myself to him. I asked him if I could get a job at the radio station. He smiled and asked if I had ever worked at a radio station before. I said “no” but that I would like to give it a try. He brushed me off politely and suggested I go home and perhaps return within six months or so, with a few ideas for new programs – that is - if I could come up with something...”
